How to Read a Honey Label: What Americans Are Missing
The Honey Label Problem
Walk into any American grocery store and you'll find dozens of honey varieties — raw, organic, natural, pure, wildflower, clover. But most Americans don't know what these labels actually mean, or more importantly, what they're hiding. This guide will change how you shop for honey forever.
Terms That Mean Something
"Raw"
This is the most important term on any honey label. Raw honey has not been heated above 40°C (104°F), which preserves natural enzymes, pollen, antioxidants, and beneficial compounds. Unfortunately, "raw" is not regulated by the FDA — any brand can use it. Look for additional verification like lab testing or third-party certification. "Unfiltered"
Unfiltered honey retains natural pollen, propolis, and beeswax particles. This is a positive sign. "Filtered" honey has been processed to remove these beneficial components, often to extend shelf life or improve appearance.
"Single-Origin"

"Unpasteurized"
Pasteurization involves heating honey to kill yeast and extend shelf life. It also destroys enzymes and reduces antioxidant content. Unpasteurized = better quality.
Terms That Mean Very Little
"Pure" or "100% Pure"
This only means no other substances were added — it says nothing about processing, heating, or quality. Highly processed honey can still be labeled "pure."
"Natural"
Completely unregulated. Means nothing specific in the context of honey labeling.
"Organic"
USDA organic certification for honey is extremely difficult to verify because bees forage up to 5 miles from the hive. Most "organic" honey claims are nearly impossible to substantiate, especially for imported honey.
Red Flags to Watch For
- No country of origin — required by law but sometimes obscured
- "Product of multiple countries" — often means blended, low-quality honey
- Unusually low price — genuine raw wild honey cannot be produced cheaply

What a Trustworthy Honey Label Looks Like
The best honey labels will tell you: where it came from (specific region, not just country), how it was harvested, that it is raw and unfiltered, and ideally provide batch-specific information or lab test results.
